Across the US up to 28 million suffer from hearing loss, while 37 percent are over the age of 65. Graduate students in Maine enrolled in the Dept. of Communication Sciences are trying to make a difference by organizing a free hearing clinic. In fact it’s their 8th free Hearing Expo and it attracted people of all ages. Attendees had their hearing screened, learned about current trends in technology and even had their hearing aids checked and cleaned. One of the more popular booths was the ‘assistive listening devices’. Students persuaded the manufacturers to loan them all the latest gadgets including vibrating alarm clocks, bracelets that light up when your cell phone rings and headphones that allow you to watch TV at your preferred volume.
So far this is the only event of its kind and the University of Maine has the bragging rights. Interested in having one in your city? For more information contact Luanne Wassen at the Conley Speech and Hearing Clinic at 581-2009.
